Mr. Penpa Tsering, President (Sikyong) of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), made his third official visit to Washington, DC from February 7-9, 2023. During his visit, he met with members of US Congress including Senators Todd Young and Brian Schatz and Representatives Michael McCaul, Young Kim, Mario Diaz-Balart, Christopher Smith, Nancy Pelosi and Jim McGovern. Hollywood actor and long-term Tibet supporter, Richard Gere, participated in some of the meetings with members of Congress via video conferencing.
The Tibetan President also spoke at an event organized by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) on why Tibet matters, and met with senior leaders of the US Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (PRM) and US Agency for International Development (USAID). He also met with Chinese scholars and pro-democracy advocates.
Another important development during Mr. Tsering’s visit was the press release on February 8, 2023 by the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Promoting a Resolution to the Tibet-China Conflict. This legislation was introduced in both the House and the Senate in January 2023. It strengthens the United States’ policy to promote dialogue between the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Dalai Lama toward a peaceful resolution of the conflict between Tibet and the PRC.
