Taiwan President Says China Views Taiwan’s ‘Annexation’ and ‘Elimination’ as a National Cause

The Republic of China Military Academy (also known as Whampoa) celebrated 100 years. Previously known as the Whampoa Military Academy, the military educational institute was founded on June 16, 1924 in Whampoa in China’s Guangzhou. The academy moved to Nanjing, Chengdu and finally to Kaohsiung at the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949.

Speaking at the centennial celebrations held at the Kaohsiung-based academy, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te told the academy cadets they must know their enemy and not give in to defeatism.

“The biggest challenge is to face the powerful rise of China, (which is) destroying the status quo in the Taiwan Strait and regards Taiwan’s annexation and the elimination of the Republic of China as the great rejuvenating cause of its people,” he said.

“The highest mission is to bravely take up the heavy responsibility and grand task of protecting Taiwan, and safeguarding the peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait,” the Taiwanese president said.
