A cross party: Group of 29 Senators established the first Inter-parliamentary group for Tibet in the Spanish Senate on February 21, 2023.
An event to mark the establishment was held in the Manuel Giménez Abad hall of the Senate. Robert Masih Nahar, President of the group, described the primary goals being to promote broader international recognition of the Tibetan issue specially aimed at improving the respect for human rights in Tibet; drawing attention to the unresolved issue of Tibet; working together with other inter-parliamentary Tibet Groups in the European countries and the Tibet Intergroup in the European Parliament to support the call for the appointment of the “EU Special Representative for Tibetan affairs” with the mandate to promote substantive dialogue between the Envoys of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the People’s Republic of China.
Penpa Tsering, President of the Central Tibetan Administration, welcomed the formation of the Inter-Parliamentary group for Tibet in the Spanish Senate and extended an invitation to Senators to visit Dharamsala.
Around 35 Senators, journalists and Tibetan representatives attended the launch of the Inter-Parliamentary Group for Tibet.
