Jiang Tianyong, a prominent Chinese human rights lawyer currently under house arrest in China, received the 2022 International Bar Association (IBA) Award for Outstanding Contribution to Human Rights. In its award citation, IBA said Jiang Tianyong has received the award “for his extraordinary dedication to defending human rights in the People’s Republic of China. Over the span of a decade, he has represented Chinese dissidents and activists, victims of HIV contamination through blood transfusions, Falun Gong religious practitioners, victims of illegal land misappropriation, and those facing discrimination due to health status, gender or age.” His wife, Jin Bianling, resident in the US, collected the award on his behalf
Mr. Jiang has been detained on multiple occasions by Chinese security agents in response to his human rights advocacy. He was sentenced in 2017 to two years in prison for “inciting subversion of state power” and was released in 2019, but was again put under house arrest.
