October 24, 2022: The new Chinese leadership that emerged from the 20th Party Congress is remarkable for not only Xi Jinping surrounding himself with only loyalists, but for the first time in 25 years, no women were appointed to the Politburo. The Politburo of the CCP, composed of 24 top officials, is the Party’s decision-making body.
China Digital Times states “this outcome contributes to a longstanding trend of gender inequality in Chinese politics that sustains and reflects broader gender inequalities in Chinese society. Despite grassroots attempts to address these issues, the CCP, firmly in the control of Xi Jinping, remains determined to assert its power through the patriarchy.”
In addition to the gender inequality, there is also the other fact that members of “ethnic minorities” have never been appointed in the top leadership and they have been given
largely ceremonial positions. This question was raised in an article in The Atlantic magazine called When Will China Have Its First Minority President? in 2012.
